So far, the year 2020 has been anything but predictable. The start of a new decade usually resembles
fresh thinking and new trends especially in the ever-evolving world of graphic design. Despite the
current challenges the world is currently facing, the art of design has still managed to wow us and
many other Durban advertising agencies over the past couple of months.

thus far.

BAUHAUS

Although the style of Bauhaus has been around for many years, it remains highly-influential throughout many industries such as graphic design, typography and architecture. The ideology behind the design is form follows function. In other words, it focuses on utility rather than show. It often resembles, simplicity, streamlines aesthetics, modernity and maintaining the original form of materials. The beauty of Bauhaus lies within the timelessness of minimalism and functionality

NEUMORPHISM

Neumorphism draws inspiration from both skeuomorphism and other popular styles including flat design. Both of these are completely different yet neumorphism falls somewhere in between. The trend uses the combination of flat design with real-life elements such as depth, texture and shadows. It boasts clean interfaces, clever use of colour and delivering an entirely unique experience for users. It creates a feeling that features such as buttons or cards are actually inside the background, and are only visible because they’re protruding from within.

RETRO

Retro design brings us back to the 1950s where one thing was for sure, the ads stood out. In today’s day and age they still encompass that unique look and feel. The eye-popping characteristics include dramatic illustrations, comic-book-style drawings and bold, striking colours.

ILLUSTRATION

This trend still remains on the podium over the past couple of years. To be more specific, the hand-drawn style seems to be the most popular. This particular style creates an interesting juxtaposition between old-school and contemporary. The charm lies within the many characteristics of this unique design. For example, the use of simplicity, abstraction and imperfection almost always make for an original design. Hand-drawn illustrations remind us of a time before tech, apps and the world wide web.

CREATIVE CUSTOM FONTS

This trend seems to be a significantly strong direction in web design. Designers have put commonly used fonts aside such as Open Sans, Lato, Roboto and have made way for more unusual and innovative fonts when creating their websites. Although regular fonts are good for applications where designers need to ensure the best accessibility on any screen of any device, the more atypical fonts allow creatives to have a lot more fun.

We’ve noticed that these trends are all about the opposites coming together: the past and the future, the geometric and the organic, the real and the artificial. Although it might take a few more years for the 20s to hit their stride, designs all over the world are already showing us glimmers of the exciting things to come.
